Tiruttani constitutes one of the 6 padai veedu shrines of Skanda, and it represents the site where Subramanyar stayed after destroying the demon Surapadman. Once Narada, on his visit to kailasa, presented twinkle mango to Siva Paravathi and requested them not to cut this mango as it may lose it’s spiritual powers. As the fruit can’t be cut, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi can’t have this fruit so they decided to offer this to one of thier son’s, Murugan and Ganesh who goes around the worldthrice. Murugan went on his vehicle peacock, Ganesh was confused as his vehicle is rat and will move slowly. Murugan reached Kailasa to collect mango, after completing the circles, to his surprise it is already offered to Ganesha. Knowing the answer from Narada, that Ganesha circle thrice to Shiva Parvathi, who were their world, Murugan felt that he had been cheated and left Kailasa and started living on the earth at Palani hills and then moved to Thiruttani hills for peace.
It is said that, Lord Murugan want to marrry Sri Valli, daughter of the king Nambiranjan. He sought help from Ganesha who then frightened Srivalli by becoming an wild elephant. Another interesting story story attached with this temple has it that Indra the king of the Gods gave his daughter Deivayanai in marriage to Skanda, and along with her presented his elephant Airavatam as part of his dowry offering. Upon Airavatam’s departure Indra found his wealth waning. Subramanyar is said to have offered to return the white elephant, however Indra bound by protocol refused to accept a gift that he had made, and insisted that that the elephant face his direction, hence the image of the elephant in this temple also faces the east.
Another story also has it that Skanda bore the discus thrown by the demon Tarakasuran on his chest, and hence there is a hollow in the chest region of the image of Subramanya in this temple. Legend also has it that Skanda gifted the discus to Vishnu. Legend also has it that Skanda imparted knowledge of Tamil to the sage Agasthyar and he is regarded as Veeramurthy, Gnanamurthy and Acharyamurthy in this shrine.
